Buffalo Boss Babes: Amy Berent

Amy Berent is the owner behind the popular comic and coffee shop -  Pulp 716: Coffee & Comics. Her shop is so popular they have 2 locations!! She is a trail blazer in the local comic book world since she was the first woman owned comic book store in WNY. That is pretty awesome if you ask us! We chatted with Amy about business, life and more.

What made you start or brought you to where you are today? Tell us your story and what makes you a Buffalo Boss Babe.

I was restless and unhappy with my previous job, and wanted to do something that would make me happy. We loved the idea of a comic book store and wanted to put our own unique spin on it, so we decided to also serve Historically Accurate coffee and bubble tea.   We opened our first Pulp 716 location in Lockport in 2015 and hit the ground running. We saw an opportunity to broaden our services to North Tonawanda with a second location in 2017 and we jumped on it. I became the proud owner of my own location on Webster Street, and incidentally, the first woman-owned comic book store in Western New York.  It's not easy to be a woman in a male dominated field, but I like to think that I am making my own mark on this business. I am hoping to show other girls and women that we can do anything we want. We don't need to follow any preconceived notions of what we "should" be doing with our lives, or follow any set of rules about what are acceptable hobbies or careers for women. There is a place for women in comics, and I won't rest until it's universally accepted. And that, I think, is what makes me a Buffalo Boss Babe.

What are your favorite things to do in the area (Buffalo and greater WNY)?

Wine tours, Dining with friends (because my husband and I are on a quest to find the best burger and wings in WNY), Bandits games, and concerts. In the Fall, I try to do as many spooky Halloween things as I can. Hayrides, Frightworld tours, and pumpkin patches.

Tell me about your favorite collaborations or a dream collaboration?

My favorite collaboration so far is our 'Featured Artist' program. We host a different artist every Saturday to give them an opportunity to share and sell their work. We have hosted every type of artist imaginable like glass blowers, authors and even a henna artist.

If you could have coffee with anyone in the world who would it be?

My mother. She sadly passed away 2 years before I started my own business. She would have been so excited for me, she was my biggest cheerleader. I would love to sit and have a coffee with her and fill her in on everything that has happened since I last talked to her.

What are your hopes, dreams, goals? Big or Small.

I hope to be a successful long term small business owner. I dream to be an inspiration to anyone that wants to make a career out of something they love.

Besides the most hilarious and kind man that I am lucky to call my husband, we have a very sassy 17 year old cat named Moose. She tolerates us because we give her treats.
